The Parable of the Talents seems to hold multiple teaching… but what does it mean?
First, you may be asking “What is a Talent?”
In this parable, it was a weight and unit of currency/money, used especially by the ancient Romans and Greeks.
Now we know what a talent was… I also think it can be used with what it means today: a person’s natural aptitude or skill.
Either way, I think the parable makes it clear that we need to use our “talents” to increase what we have been given – or more accurately, what we have been lent or entrusted to manage… and should be expected to give an account of what we did wit the talents that would given to use to manage, in our Masters absence. (which also means we should be expecting His return).
If you agree – then you may what to consider this parable as encouragement to find ways to increase your talents and their effect on those around you and warning of what will happen to those that “hide” their talents.
“So take the talent from him and give it to him who has the ten talents. For to everyone who has will more be given, and he will have an abundance. But from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away. And cast the worthless servant into the outer darkness. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” ~ Matthew 25:28-30
Don’t hide your talents… make efforts to make your talents increase / take action today… tomorrow might be too late.
